Phone interview

Do you know why you should wear a business suit to a phone interview?

It's near impossible to search for jobs without getting a phone interview. A phone interview is your chance to give an employer a quick peak of what you're all about.

Most job seekers seem to forget this, but the whole point of the phone interview is to qualify you for an in-person interview. That's it.

Knowing that, here's a few techniques you can use to help you score an in-person interview on your next phone interview.

Be enthusiastic: Some people find it helps to smile while they talk. Use a land line, and disable call waiting. Interruptions caused by dropped or incoming calls just add stress you don't need.

Have a list of questions prepared: Well-thought-out questions show you're really interested in the company and the job. Also, have your resume in front of you. Make sure it's the same version the interviewer has. The Complete Interview Answer Guide has a great list of questions you can ask your interviewer.

Match your style to the interviewer's: If the interviewer uses a lot of technical terms and industry jargon, so should you.

Never interrupt: Silently count to two or three seconds after the interviewer stops talking before you start.

Avoid negative words: Banish negative verbs like can't, haven't and don't from your vocabulary. Employers want people who can offer solutions, not potentially create problems.

Recap your fit for the job: Be ready with a 30-second summary of why you're right for this job, using an example or two from your work history.

Ask about next steps: At the end of the call, ask how well your qualifications meet the company's needs. This will give you a chance to address minor issues immediately. Then ask when you can meet with them in person.

Say thanks: Follow up with an e-mail. While you're at it, briefly remind the interviewer how your skills and achievements can help the company meet its goals. Perfect Thank You Letters will show you how to thank your interviewer with an email.

Wear business attire: Of course the interviewer can't see you, but you won't feel, or sound, as businesslike in your pajamas.

Eat a cough drop before the call: A medicated cough drop, especially one with menthol will be good for your voice. It's a small but helpful thing.

Have a photo of your interviewer on your computer screen:This could be from LinkedIn, Facebook, the company website, or anywhere else your interviewer's face might appear online. It helps makes the interview a little more like an in-person conversation.

Avoid saying "um" or "ah": Try replacing those sounds with a pause, which is a sign of intelligence.

Take notes: Jot down topics and questions that seem to be of particular interest to the person interviewing you, so you can touch on these when you send your thank-you.

Even if you decide you don't want the job, proceed as if you did: People sometimes realize during a phone interview that the job in question just isn't for them. At this stage, you still don't have the full story. You never know whom you might meet at in-person interviews, and what networking opportunities could result.

Until you get a firm offer and must make a final decision, keep your options open. After all, that's exactly what the company is doing.

Hope you enjoyed today's lesson on phone interviewing. There are more great phone interviewing tips in the Complete Interview Answer Guide

Love story

Harold and Ruth Knapke, Married 65 Years, Die 11 Hours Apart

Ruthie and Harold "Doc" Knapke spent more than 65 years of their lives together and, in the end, they died just 11 hours apart.
"I think we all agreed it was no coincidence," said Carol Romie, one of the Fort Recovery, Ohio, couple's six children. "When mom became ill, we tried to make it clear to dad that mom wasn't going to make it, and he seemed really agitated for a day or so, at first. And then he became really calm, and I think he decided, 'No she's not going without me.'"
Harold Knapke died on Sunday, Aug. 11, at 7:30 a.m. at the age of 91. Ruth Knapke died later that evening, at 6:30 p.m., at the age of 89, according to Romie. They both passed away in the room they'd shared for the past two months in a nursing home near Russia, Ohio, where they'd moved about six years ago to be closer to their daughter, Pat, a nurse.
"Mom had said so, in as many words, that she didn't want to be here without dad," Romie said. "They were just so devoted to one another."
The Knapkes raised their six children - Carol and Pat, along with Margaret, Ginny, Ted and Tim - in Fort Recovery, where Harold Knapke worked as a teacher, principal and coach in the local school system and Ruth Knapke worked as a school secretary after being a stay-at-home mom.
The couple met during World War II when they became pen pals after Harold Knapke met Ruth Knapke's brother-in-law, Steve, while serving overseas, and discovered, thanks to letters from his future wife, that they came from nearby hometowns.
"Uncle Steve said, 'Well why don't you write to her?,' and they started writing," Romie said.
The Knapkes would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on Aug. 20.
"It's one of those love stories you don't see in the movies," said Romie. "Theirs was definitely a love just not the glitzy, Hollywood side. They worked at it and they knew they needed to work at it and it worked."
Following their deaths, the couple's six children, 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren laid them to rest together in a cemetery in their beloved Fort Recovery. The funeral procession made a stop at the home where the Knapkes raised their children. The family that lives there now lowered the flag outside the home to half-staff.

"Mom and dad said while they were living in Russia, [Ohio], that they just wanted to go home," Romie said. "The fact that they stopped the procession in front of home meant a lot to us that day."
Now Romie and her siblings are left to cherish the memories of their parents and their love affair that lasted, literally, "until death do us part."
"When they were at the house in Russia, the caregiver would get mom tucked in each night and then dad would go in and bless her with holy water and give her a kiss. That was part of their ritual," Romie recalled, calling them "very affectionate."
"Saturday nights, when they watched 'The Lawrence Welk Show,' they'd sit on the couch together and hold hands," Romie said. "We would help mom up so she could sway because she loved to dance. Dad used to say that mom could make any man look like a good dancer because she was so good."

Another lesson

Never walk away from an interview telling yourself that the whole job thing is now out of your hands. That's how unsuccessful job hunters think.

What takes place after the first interview -- when the ranking of candidates takes place -- decides who has the inside track on winning the job.

Your follow-up may be the tiebreaker with the job going to you over other promising candidates. And even if the employer already planned to offer you the job, your follow-up creates goodwill that can silken your success when you join the company.

Follow up vigorously. It's your caring that counts.

I like using email to follow-up because it saves time and gets through right away. Nothing too long, just a short paragraph that re-emphasizes your interest in the job.

One more point: Remember to complete your subject line with sales pizzazz: "Thank you for reviewing my qualifications: Sales, 6 yrs, autos."

A week or two after I send a follow-up email, I also use the phone to follow-up. Anyone can send email because it's easy, but picking up the phone and calling takes effort, and that type of follow-up sends a good message to prospective employers that you are genuinely interested in the job and are not lazy.

Letters
Write a thank-you letter for the interview within 24 hours to strengthen the good impression you made in the interview. You need not stop with one letter -- if the employer has left you dangling in the wind waiting for a hiring decision then you need to limit your communication to phone calls.

Telephone calls
If you call interviewers too often now, you waste their prime work hours, annoy them, and probably jeopardize your opportunity for the job. Space your follow-up calls -- once a month is probably plenty.

Once upon a time, all that job callers had to worry about was getting past gatekeeper assistants. Now, voice mail has joined human gatekeepers in throwing road blocks in front of job seekers who try to set up interviews or follow-up interviews.

The big voice mail question for job seekers is -- Should I leave a message on voice mail? Opinions vary, but, as a practical matter, you may have to leave a message if you don't connect after the first few calls.

You won't get all your calls returned, but your chances improve when you say something interesting in a 30-second sound bite: "This is (name). I'm calling about the (job title or department) opening. After reflecting on some of the issues you mentioned during our meeting, I thought of a facet of one problem you might like to know (create intrigue). My number is ....

Opening the conversation
Here is a sprinkling of conversation starters:
  • Is this a good time to talk?
  • I think you'll be interested to know ....
  • I understand you're still reviewing many applications.
  • I forgot to go into the key details of (something mentioned during the interview) that might be important to you.
  • While listening to you, I neglected to mention my experience in (function). It was too important for me to leave out, since the position calls for substantial background in that area.

Keeping the conversational ball rolling
Try these approaches to maintain the conversation:
  • Remind the interviewer why you're so special, what makes you unique (exceptional work in a specific situation, innovating): "Let me review what I'm offering you that's special."
  • Establish a common denominator or business philosophy: "It seems like we both approach work in the (name of) industry from the same angle."
  • Note a shared interest that benefits the employer: "I found a new Web site that may interest you -- it's XYZ. It reports on the news items we discussed . . . Would you like the URL?"
If you follow and practice everything I have taught you in the past seven days over the course of a month, I can guarantee you'll impress your interviewers and start getting more job offers.

If you're still struggling with what to say to interviewers when they ask you all those questions, I highly recommend the Complete Interview Answer Guide.
It has helped thousands of job seekers just like you lock in a high paying job offer. It helped them overcome their weaknesses and as a result they gave outstanding interview performances that sealed the deal for them. Try it today!
